Google Books
As soon as I hear that there is a plan by a commercial organisation to digitise out of copyright books I feel depressed because I know that on a whole the books they will capture will be obscure, of little value and interest. That is why they are out of copyright. Knowing a little of the publishing industry, I know that the big publishing companies watch like hawks anything of remote value that is coming out of copyright and they snap them up and whack a copyright on them.
A few years ago, I thought it would be a big threat to the commercial publishing industry but it is still very much a 'David'.
I've looked at Google Books and it is a sad depressing collection of obscure and valueless titles.
Google Scholar
Google Scholar, on the other hand, fares a little better, because of the global committment to OpenArchives and Share ware.
